Operation Red Cure
The year is 2035, the Public Health Panel convenes in Pretoria to respond to a rapidly escalating global emergency caused by the outbreak of a fatal virus named as Rooi virus. Originally developed by Vale pharmaceuticals, It was designed to aid in HIV research but was coincidentally released into rural regions of South Africa transforming into the deadly virus with an abnormally high mortality and transmission rate. A distinct symptom of the virus is the red skin similar to sunburn marks that the virus gives to its victims. The Zetavirus has rapidly spread through the Southern African region and as the number of cases rise and containment efforts struggle to prove effective, the situation demands the utmost attention from the pharmaceutical industry.
Other pharmaceutical companies have accused Vale Pharmaceuticals of deliberately releasing the virus so that they can advertise their services and secure a profit from this calamity. A complex conflict also lies between major pharmaceutical companies as some firms possess the internationally recognized patented techniques and treatments for the virus which could potentially curb its spread. However, they remain highly reluctant to lend these patents to other companies without profit and enter affected areas due to high operational costs.
The committee must navigate a landscape riddled with conflicting interests. Ensuring medical stability, negotiating access to patented treatments and determining accountability. Delegates are expected to analyse all the dimensions of the crisis whilst also maintaining their own financial interests. They have to make decisions which will not only influence the trajectory of the virus outbreak but shape the future norms governing health and corporate responsibility.
